Forestry: 4_Field Skills and Identification Flashcards
(26 cards)
What are Coniferous Trees?
Trees, often called evergreens, that typically retain their foliage year-round and bear cones.
What are Deciduous Trees?
Trees that shed their leaves annually, usually in the autumn.
What is a Lodgepole Pine?
A tall, slender coniferous tree valued for construction and pulp.
What is a White Spruce?
A robust coniferous tree favoured for building materials and paper production.
What is a Black Spruce?
A small to medium-sized coniferous tree common in boreal forests, used for lumber and pulpwood.
What is a Balsam Fir?
A medium-sized coniferous tree valued as a Christmas tree and for paper and lumber production, also yielding ‘Canada balsam’ resin.
What is an Aspen?
Fast-growing deciduous trees (including Trembling Aspen and Balsam Poplar) with smooth bark, used for furniture, pulp, and paper.
What is a White Birch?
A deciduous tree known for its white, peeling bark, used for furniture, flooring, plywood, and traditional craft.
What is a Balsam Poplar?
A deciduous tree found in moist areas, used for pulp, paper, crates, and pallets, with a resinous fragrance.
What are Sustainable Forestry Practices?
Forest management methods that ensure the long-term health and productivity of forest ecosystems while balancing economic gains and environmental preservation.
What is Clear-cutting?
A forestry method where large areas of forest are cut down.
What is Selective Logging?
A forestry method that involves carefully choosing and cutting down only specific trees.
What is D-tape?
A specialized tape used to measure the diameter of a tree, typically at breast height (DBH).
What is DBH?
The standard height at which tree diameter is measured, usually 1.3 meters or 4.5 feet above the ground.
What is a Clinometer?
A handheld instrument used to measure vertical angles, often used in forestry to determine tree height or slope.
What is an Increment Borer?
A tool used to extract a core sample from a tree to determine its age, growth rate, and soundness by examining tree rings.
What is Satellite Imagery?
Images of the Earth’s surface captured by satellites, used in forestry for monitoring and analysis.
What is Sentinel-2?
A satellite system providing high-resolution optical imagery for monitoring forest change, with a resolution of 10x10 meters.
What is Landsat 8?
A satellite system providing moderate-resolution optical imagery for monitoring forest change, with a resolution of 30x30 meters.
What is NDVI?
A measure calculated from satellite imagery that indicates the health and density of vegetation based on its reflection of red and near-infrared light.
What is Remote Sensing?
The acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object, in this context, the use of satellite or aerial imagery for forestry applications.
What is Basal Area?
The measurement of the cross-sectional area of a tree trunk, typically measured in square feet at DBH, used to assess stand density.
What are Angle Gauge / Wedge Prism?
Tools used to quickly measure the basal area within a given forest area.
What is Reconnaissance Mapping?
Broad-scale mapping of forest cover over a large area.
