In a follow up study:
106 heterosexual couples
procedure markey and markey
Large sample of self selected undergraduates
Using a questionnaire it was asked:
Psychological characteristics
Values
Attitudes
- within a romantic partner
- after they were asked to describe themselves
In a follow up study:
106 heterosexual couples of participants selected through advertisements in the local newspaper and within the university
The paarticipants filled out a questionnaire of their own and their partners characteristics
results markey and markey
The results showed that the way participants describe themselves is similar of that they would like within a partner
The second studies results showed again that people want a partner similar to themsleves
The second study showed that the more loving and harmonious relationships have romantic partners similar to themselves in some characters but not all:
Eg if one partner is dominant, the other is submissive
Therefore it could be said that total similarity is the wish but not always ideal
strentghs markey and markey
It is a large sample therefore enhancing reliability
weaknesses markey and markey
It was self report with therefore means there could have been demand characteristics
All participants are young american students therefore results are not generlizable to other relationship types and cultures
Correlational analysis was used therefore it is difficult to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between personality and preference in a romantic partner
