Formative 9 Flashcards
(23 cards)
Define a Grenade
An item containing a filling of explosive, smoke or other material designed to be thrown by hand, dropped from an aircraft or projected by small arms weapons or from a grenade discharger
Components of a Grenade (FIDPO)
- Fuzing
- Igniferous
- Detonator
- Payload
- Outer Casing
Design Requirements of a Grenade
- Size and Weight
- Reliability
- Range/ Danger Zone
- Locking Device/ Safety
- Ease of manufacture
- Low Cost
- Logistics
What are the types of Grenades
- Defensive/ Fragmentation
- Offensive / Blast
- HEAT/ HEDP
- Smoke
- Riot Control
- Incendiary
- Practice/ Training
- Dual Purpose
- Stun/ Anti-terrorist
What are the 6 requirements of a Grenade
- Grenade must function
- Must be reliable
- Ensure safety of thrower
- Weatherproof
- Economical to produce (simple to produce)
- Silent
What are the two types of Fuzes
- Delay
- Impact
The standard grenade fuze assembly consists of
- Striker
- Safety Lever
- Safety Pin
- Percussion Cap
- Fuze Body
- Delay element
- Detonator
What are the types of Impact fuzes
- Impact Inertia
- Piezoelectric
- Electric
- Always Acting
- PD
- PIBD
Grenade Hand Special Purpose 1/2/9 Bang Fuze consists of
- Striker
- Percussion Cap
- Delay Element
- Detonator
Describe the Initiation of the 9 Bang
- Fly off lever separates from grenade body
- Striker impacts the percussion Primer
- Primer ignites the delay train immediately
- Initial delay of 0.5 secs 1st charge initiated
- Blows out vent hole
- Delay continues to burn
- Delay element burns for 2.4 secs
- The remaining charge are initiated as delay burns past
What is the candlepower and DB of the 2 bang and 9 Bang
2 Bang - 3,000,000 Candlepower
- 170 dB
9 Bang - 2,000,000 Candlepower
- 165 dB
Grenade Hand F1 has a Lethal and Casualty Radius of
Lethal - 6 mtrs
Casualty - 15 mtrs
3 Major Sub assemblies of a Grenade Hand Fragment
- Body Assembly
- Fuze Assembly
- Striker Housing Assembly
The Operation of the Grenade Hand Fragment F1
- Removal of the safety pin release of the safety lever. When the safety lever is released, it is forced away from the grenade by a striker acting under the force of a striker spring
- The striker rotates on its axis and strikes the M42 percussion primer.
- The primer ignites the delay element, which burns 5 +/- 0.5secs, then functions the detonator.
- The detonator passes the detonation wave onto the booster pellet which in turn initiates the main charge.
What is the lethal, Casualty and Safety Radius of the Grenade Hand Fragment F2
Lethal Radius - <1.5m
Casualty Radius - 15m
Safety Radius - 30m
What is the 76mm IR MASKE designed to provide
Provide both visual and IR screening performance to counter threats from anti-tank guided weapons and to prevent laser designation
What is the Screen duration for the 76mm IR MASKE
Visual - > 35 seconds
IR - > 30 seconds
What is the function of the 76mm IR MASKE
Payload consisting of two separate chemical compositions in the one canister with both compositions being ignited and spread by the same bursting charge.`
What is the qty of RP contained within the L84A2
190 - 205 grams
Describe the function of the L84A2 from safety pin is withdrawn
The grenade is thrown and the safety lever is forced away from the grenade body by a striker acting under the force of a striker spring. The striker impinges on the percussion primer. Flash from the primer ignites the delay composition which burns for 3.5 - 5 secs. Burster ignites disrupting grenade body and simultaneously ignites main fill RP fill which provides dense cloud of white smoke out to 30m for approx 30 secs in all directions from burst point.
What is the role of the Thermal/ Incendiary Grenades
To Generate an intense source of heat to penetrate & destroy material.
What is the burn time of the grenade
30 - 45 Seconds
What is the delay element burn time
0.7 - 2 seconds
