Fossil Fuels Flashcards
(11 cards)
Names of the 3 main fossil fuels
Coal
Natural Gases
Crude Oil
Importantce of coal to society
Generating electricity
Importantce of natural gas to society
Cooking + heating
Importantce of crude oil to society
Petrol + diseal for cars + Jet fuel for airplanes
Why are fossil fuels non-renewable?
Takes millions of years to form
Alternative energy sources
Renewable energy - produced from natural sources that can replenish themselves such as wind, solar, tidal or hydroelectric
Advantages of a hydrogen powered car
Sufficient supply of water
Sustainable and renewable
Only product is water
Disadvantages of a hydrogen powered car
Need electricity to produce hydrogen
Currently would cost a lot of money
Safety concerns - flammable
Disadvantages of a petrol powered car
Run out of petrol
Produces polluting gases which have harmful effects
Formation of coal
Millions of years ago trees and plants died
They were buried under layers of mud
Over time heat and pressure turned the plant remains into coal
Therefore coal is deep underground
We have to obtain it via mining before we can burn it into power stations
Formation of oil and gas
Millions of years ago sea creatures died
When sea creatures died they fell to the sea bed
They were covered with sand and squashed
Over millions of years the heat and pressure cause d the remains of the sea creatures ti turn into crude oil and natural gas
We have to obtain them by drilling
