functional recovery Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
what is functional recovery?
A
- is the transfer of functions from a damaged area of the brain after trauma to other undamaged areas.
- following physical injury/ trauma or the experience of a stroke, unaffected areas are sometimes able to adapt or compensate for those areas that are damamged
2
Q
what happens in the brain during recovery?
A
- the brain is able to rewire and reorganize itself by forming new synaptic connections close to the area of damage
- secondary neural pathway = unmasked to enable functioning to continue
3
Q
Tajiri et al - the role of stem cells in recovery from brain injury
A
- randomly assigned rats with traumatic brain injury to one of the 2 groups
- 1 group received transplants of stem cells into the region of the brain affected by traumatic injury
- control group = solution infused into the brain of stem cells rats showed clear development of neuron-like cells in that area of injury
