What does harmonious mean?

How does functionalisms view society and why?
A human body as each part has to work together

Mass agreement of what is most important, aged in society

Basic needs of society in order to sustain itself and be effective in the future

Society or community
What is a macro approach for functionalism?
Views society as a whole
What is anomie?
Senses or normlessness, no norms
What is anarchy?
No recognition of authority
What did Durkheim say about crime?
Healthy for society, as if there was no crime then it would become dysfunctional
When will crime become dysfunctional?
When it is abnormally too high or too low
What did Durkheim say about punishment?
Serves to heal the wounds done to the collective sentiments
What is boundary maintenance?
Crime unites society by identifying and ostracising a wrong doer and reaffirming shared rules
What happens if there is too little crime according to Durkheim?
Too much social control, social has a lack of freedom

What are the problems with functionalism?
The CJS is not always functional
Crime is caused by society and not an individual
Law isn’t made with value consensus

Everyone shares the same goal but for some people these goals are blocked
What is strain theory?
that crime and deviance result from a mismatch between cultural goals and the means available to achieve them
What is meritocracy?
Society based on the most hardworking gets the most power
What are the responses to the cultural success goal?
Conformity
Innovation
Ritualism
Retreatism
Rebellion
What is conformity?
Conform both to success goals and normative means of reaching them, strive for success
What is innovation?
Reject normative means of achieving success, turns to deviance instead. Their way is blocked, they abandon institutional means while retaining success aspirations
What is ritualism?
Largely abandon the commonly held success goals, lower middle class. Abandon their success goal, they are striving for success but rejected success goals - workaholics
What is retreatism?
Psychotics, drug addicts. Strongly internalised both cultural goals and the institutional means, unable to achieve success
What is rebellion?
Rejection of success goals and the institutional means, replaces them with different goals and means. Alternative and wish to create a new society
