What is liquid surveillance?
Subtle form of surveillance which we don’t know we are a part of
Targets and sorts everyone
What is self surveillance?
The attention on individual pays to their own behaviour when facing observation by others
Behaviour changed when you think someone is watching
What is a panopticon?
All seeing in prisons
Prisoners can’t see guard, guard can see all
Prisoners don’t know when they are being watched
Surveillance becomes self surveillance
What is a synopticon?
Everyone is watching everyone
Police body cams
Ring door bells
Dash cams on cars
What is actual justice and profiling?
A type of justice which emphasises the need to calculate the risk of certain crimes happening
When is actual justice and profiling used?/
Predict and prevent future offending
What does increased surveillance have on crime control?
More external social control
What is surveillance creep?
Tech introduced for one purpose gets used for another
What is profiling used as for crime control?
Using data and stats to determine who should be put under surveillance
Why is intrusive surveillance a negative?
Unethical and against human rights
Why is surveillance a technological arms race?
Offenders often find a way around it
Why doesn’t deterrents not work on everyone?
Not everyone has a self surveillance mindset
