What is the primary function of the respiratory system?
Facilitates the efficient exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide with the external environment.
What are the four general functions of the respiratory system?
- Internal Respiration
- Pulmonary Ventilation
- External Respiration
- Transport of Gases
What is pulmonary ventilation?
Also called breathing, it is the mechanical movement of air into and out of the lungs.
What occurs during external respiration?
The exchange of gases that occurs between the blood and body tissues.
What is external respiration?
The exchange of gases that occurs between the alveoli and the pulmonary capillaries.
What is the conducting zone of the respiratory system?
Serves as the passageway of air into the lungs.
What does the respiratory zone consist of?
Structures that facilitate the actual gas exchange.
What is the primary entrance of air into the respiratory tract?
Nose.
What are the functions of the nose in the respiratory system?
- Helps moisten incoming air
- Warms incoming air
- Filters incoming air
What is the nasal cavity and its components?
Consists of nasal hairs (vibrissae) and cilia, which filter the air.
What is the function of the pharynx?
Serves as a passageway for both air and food into the esophagus.
What is the role of the epiglottis?
Helps close the entrance to the trachea when swallowing food.
What is the function of the larynx?
Helps in sound production and protects the trachea from food aspiration.
What connects the larynx to the lungs?
Trachea.
What does the trachea consist of that aids in its function?
Cilia that help propel debris-containing mucus back into the esophagus.
What are bronchi?
Two branches that penetrate into each of the lungs originating from the trachea.
What do bronchi consist of?
Cartilage and smooth muscles that prevent it from collapsing.
How many times do the bronchi branch to form smaller bronchioles?
Approximately 23 times.
What are the primary respiratory organs?
Lungs.
What are alveoli?
Thin-walled structures rich in capillaries that allow efficient gas exchange.
What is the general mechanism of breathing called?
Pulmonary ventilation.
What muscles are involved in the general mechanism of breathing?
- Ribs
- Diaphragm
- Intercostal muscles
What are the two phases of breathing?
- Inspiration
- Expiration
What happens to lung volume during respiratory muscle contraction?
Increase in the volume of the lungs.
