Gamebirds Flashcards
(29 cards)
what are the 5 diseases seen in young chicks?
- yolks infection
- septicaemia / salmonellosis
- starvation
- aspergillosis
- rotavirus
what are the two causes of yolk sac infection?
infection of eggs via omphalitis / navel infection
environmental spread
what is the main agent that causes septicaemia in young chicks?
salmonella app
what are the main Sx of starvation in young chicks?
high mortality, lethargic chicks, empty gizzard on PM or gizzard containing bedding material
what causes aspergillosis?
aspergillus fumigatus
how do chicks become infected with aspergillum?
via feed, bedding or environment
what are the main Sx of aspergillosis in chicks?
gasping, weight loss, mortality
how do chicks become infected by rotavirus?
via eggshell or environmental contamination
what are the main Sx of rotavirus infection in chicks?
depression, dropped wings, closed eyes, huddling, ruffled feathers, death
how is rotavirus infection in chicks Tx and Px?
Tx = disinfectant in drinking water or via spray Px = frequent egg collection with cleaning and good hygiene
which game bird spp chicks does rotavirus affect?
pheasants and partridge
what 4 diseases mostly affect growing game bird poults?
- Spironucleosis / Trichomoniasis
- Coccidiosis
- Parasites
- Enteritis / Dysbacteriosis
what are the three causal agents of Spironucleosis / Trichomoniasis?
Spironucleus meleagridis
Trichomonas gallinae
Hexamita
what are the Sx of Spironucleosis / Trichomoniasis infection?
watery D+ (often yellow, frothy), dehydration, weight loss, lethargy
how is Spironucleosis / Trichomoniasis Dx?
Spironucleus = smear of duodenum / ileum Trichomonas = smear of caecum
how is Spironucleosis / Trichomoniasis Tx and Px?
Tx = AntiB Px = environmental hygiene, appropriate stocking density
what is the main spp isolated in coccidiosis of growing game bird poults?
E. colchici in caecum
when is coccidiosis most common in growing poults?
15d to 16wks
what are the main Sx of coccidiosis in growing poults?
weight loss, lethargy, ruffled feathers, dropped wings
how is coccidiosis Tx and Px?
Tx = toltazuril or amprolium Px = in-feed coccidiostat drugs
what are the main enteric and respiratory parasites that affect growing poults?
enteric = ascaris, capillaria respiratory = syngamus trachea
what does enteritis / dysbacteriosis cause?
scour seen in growing poults at 22/23wks leading to dehydration
what are the 4 main endoparasites of breeding gamebirds?
Syngamus trachea
Heterakis gallinarum
capillaria spp
ascarid spp
what is Heterakis gallinarum the intermediate host for?
histomonas meleagridis - ‘blackhead’
