What is nitrogen
Nitrogen exists as a diatomic gas and is bonded covalently with a triple covalent bond
Properties of nitrogen
Colourless
Odourless
Not very reactive
Uses of Nitrogen
In Food packaging to keep food fresh
Manufacture of Ammonia
Liquid Nitrogen is used as a refrigerant
What is amonia
Gas at room temperature and used in manufacture of:
Fertilisers
Nitric acid
Nylon
How can you test for ammonia
Ammonia and hydrochloric acid can be used to test for each other. If a glass rod is dipped into one solution and held above the other solution, a white cloud will form.
How are fertilisers formed
By using an acid + alkali reaction with ammonia
Ammonia + Sulfuric Acid = Ammonium Sulfate
2NH3 + H2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4
What is Hydrogen
Exists as a diatomic gas and is bonded covalently
Properties of Hydrogen
Odourless
Colourless
Insoluble in water
Lighter than air
Strong Reducing Agent
Flammable
Uses of Hydrogen
Rocket Fuel
Clean Fuel
Meteorological balloons
Production of Ammonia
How can hydrogen be prepared
Reacting an acid and a metal
Zinc + Hydrochloric Acid = Zinc Chloride + Hydrogen
Zn + 2HCl = ZnCl2 + H2
How can hydrogen be collected
dry test tube by upward displacement
Hydrogen, being lighter than air, rises and pushes the air out of the test tube. Eventually, the test tube becomes filled with hydrogen.
Hydrogen reaction with Oxygen
Hydrogen burns in oxygen to form water
Exothermic reaction
Means that it has potential as a clean fuel as it doesn’t give off any harmful gases
2H2 + O2 = 2H2O
Whats a clean fuel
One which produces non-polluting products only (such as water) when its burned
What is oxygen
Exists as a diatomic gas and is bonded covalently with a double covalent bond
Properties of Oxygen
Colourless
Odourless
Soluble in water
Flammable
Uses of oxygen
Breathing apparatus in hospitals or for divers
Welding
Making steel
Rocket Fuel
What is a catalyst
Substance which speeds up a reaction without being used up itself
What happens when carbon burns in oxygen
Glows red hot
Colourless gas of carbon dioxide produced
C + O2 = CO2
