Rates of Reaction Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a rate of reaction
Rate of a chemical reaction is the speed of the reaction
Why do we measure rates
Great importance to industry
In industry products must be obtained quickly in order to make as much money as possible. Therefore any method of increasing the rate is useful
What affects the rate of a chemical reaction
Temperature
Concentration
Particle Size (Surface area)
Catalysts
how do we measure the rate of reaction
amount of reactant used up within a certain time
amount of product produced within a certain time
How do we measure the speed of a reaction
Time taken to disappear
Time taken for something to appear
change in mass
Volume of gas given off
What is the best method for measuring the rate of reaction in the formula Mg + H2SO4 = MgSO4 = H2
Measuring the amount of hydrogen produced using a gas syringe
How do we get an overall rate of reaction in the formula Mg + H2SO4 = MgSO4 = H2
Measuring length of time takes magnesium to disappear, monitoring amount of hydrogen produced as reaction proceeds
This shows us how the rate changes throughout the reaction
What is a catalyst
substance that increases speed of chemical reaction without being used up
What is the activation energy
Minimum energy required for a reaction to occur
What is collision theory
Explains why reactions are affected by certain factors by looking at how particles behave
How to increase the rate of reaction
Increase the number of collisions
Increase the energy they have when they colide
What does increasing the temperature do and how does this cause a faster rate of reaction
Causes particles to move faster with more energy, therefore collide more often and with greater energy. This means more successful collisions per second and therefore a faster rate of reaction
