It cultivated the ideology that gay sex could kill you. It increased the stigmatisation of gay and bi men. This correlated with higher levels of discrimination towards LGBT people.

What was Hart Island cemetery?
A cemetery that was used to bury people whose families wouldn’t or couldn’t pay for a funeral. They had markers as headstones and only had a number (dehumanising the community even in death).
How did the government track the number of people that had AIDS at the beginning of the crisis?
They tattooed people with the disease.
What was Section 28 and how did it affect LGBTQIA+ people?
It prohibited local governments from promoting homosexuality or the acceptance of homosexuality within the family.

Same sex relationships were ‘a pretended family’

It was legal to acknowledge gender identities which were not heternormative.
