Genetic Code Flashcards
(8 cards)
How are mRNA nucleotides arranged?
They are arranged in 3 nucleotide groups called codons.
Degeneracy
Multiple codons can code for the same amino acid.
How many chain terminators are there and do they code for amino acids?
3 and no they do not code for amino acids.
How many chain initiators are there and does it code for an amino acid?
1 and yes it does code for an amino acid.
How many codons actually code for amino acids and what is the significance of this?
61 codons code for the 20 amino acids. There are enough codons to confer degeneracy to the mRNA.
What direction is the protein produced?
N-terminal to C-terminal
What direction is the reading frame read?
5’ to 3’
What constitutes the open reading frame?
From the initiation codon to the stop codon.
