Q

what does genetic diversity lead to

A

more allleles in a population of species is beneficial as it gives the species a greater chance to survive a changing environment

Q

what reduces genetic diversity

A

genetic bottleneck
-random event which causes a reduction in population
- large number of population die before reproducing
- this reduces the gene pool alleles
- smaller individuals remain with a smaller genetic diversity

founder affect
-a few organisms from start to
- new population have less variety of alleles in initial gene pool
- new individuals refocused together to establish large population

Q

natural selection

A

change in the allele frequency in a population where an advantage allele increases leading population to become better adapted to survive
MARIA
mutation
which creates a different version of the gene called an allele
advantage and survivable
reproduction
change in allele frequency

Q

what’s directional and stabilising selection

A

directional - one extreme which are more likely to survive and reproduce
stabilising - middle range are more likely to survive and reproduce

Q

what adaptions do natural selection result in species

A

anatomical - structural features
physiological - within organism eg venom production

Q

what’s selection pressure

A

Selection pressures are environmental factors that make some traits more or less advantageous for survival and reproduction within a population.
