species and taxonomy Flashcards
(4 cards)
what’s taxonomy , hierarchy and binomial system
-science of classification
-smaller groups in larger groups with no overlaps
includes genus and species
what’s the problem of using observable features in classification
some organisms will look alike due to convergent evolution
evolve similar features but aren’t related
live in similar environments and are exposed to similar selection pressures
similar alleles provide similar selective advantages
advances in techniques
dna sequences/ mrna sequences - note similarities between bases mean more closely related the organisms
amino acid sequences - more similarities means the more closely related the organisms are
immunology - similar proteins will beinf to the same antibodies
explain courtship behaviour
carried out by organisms to attract the mate of the right species
successful mating is needed so alleles and species can survive
done by releasing chemicals or behaviour which are unique to each species
normally done by males and females choose the individual they want to mate with
courtship ensures
- recognition of the same species
- recognition of the opposite sex
- indication of sexual maturity and fertility
- increases survival of the offspring
