What is genetics?

Genetics is the study of how traits or characteristics are inherited.

1

What are inherited characteristics? Give three examples.

inherited characteristics are passed on from parents to children.
Examples: eye colour, height, shape of face.

2

What are non-inherited characteristics?
give three examples

Non-inherited characteristics are learned during life.
Example: learning to drive a car, reading, riding a bike.

3

What are chromosomes?

thread-like structures made up of DNA and protein. They are found in the nucleus of the cell.

4

what are genes?

sections of DNA found on chromosomes

5

How many chromosomes do humans have in the nuclei of their cells

46

6

how many chromosomes do humans inherit from their father?

23

7

how many chromosomes do humans inherit from their mother?

23

8

how many chromosomes does a zygote contain?

46

9

what is the thing called when the chromosomes from the mother and father meet?

a zygote

10

where are genes found?

on chromosomes

11

where are chromosomes found?

in the nucleus of the cell

12

when are non-inherited characteristics learned?

during life

13

how do we get inherited characteristics?

from are parents

14

where are the chromosomes from the father found?

the sperm

15

where are the chromosomes from the mother found?

in the egg

16

where is the nucleus found?

the cell

17

what is the male chromosome?
whate is the female chromosome?

xy
xx

18

what are the names of the DNA subunits?

A, T, C, G

19

what is the function of dna?

dna contains code for proteins that perform most life functions
