genotypes and ohenotypes Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a genotype?
The genetic makeup of an organism, represented by letters.
Examples: TT, Tt, tt
What are the types of genotypes?
There are two main types: Homozygous and Heterozygous.
Homozygous: same alleles (e.g., AA, TT); Heterozygous: different alleles (e.g., Aa, Tt)
What is a homozygous genotype?
An organism with the same allele from both parents.
Examples: AA, HH, TT
What are the types of homozygous genotypes?
There are two types: dominant and recessive.
Dominant: AA, HH, TT; Recessive: aa, hh, tt
What is a phenotype?
The physical expression of a genotype, described by traits.
Examples: Tall, short
What is a heterozygous genotype?
An organism with both a dominant and a recessive allele.
Example: Aa, Hh, Tt
What does it mean to be heterozygous for a trait?
Individuals are carriers for the recessive allele.
Also called ‘hybrid’
