Geog P2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Give 2 pull factors that encourage people to move to urban areas in LICs/NEEs
-Better healthcare
-More job opportunities
Suggest why sanitation systems in cities in NEEs create challenges (4)
Many LIC/NEE cities are growing rapidly with high levels of natural increase and rural to urban migration, which makes it difficult for enough facilities to be provided to all the people.
Many people have to use the toilets, which means they soon get dirty, and
disease can spread easily.
Outline one advantage of recycling waste
-Reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfill
-Which reduces the amount of land needed to bury waste
Birmingham transport sustainability 3 points?
-Birmingham connected
-Clean air zone
-Bicycle lanes or the new metro
Outline the limitations of economic measures of development (3)
-Economic measures do not account for people’s QOL which is important socially
-Economic measures are normally about 1 person so don’t show the extreme wealth of poverty
Explain how physical factors lead to uneven development (2)
-Natural hazards may limit economic growth as a lot of money is spent repairing the damage which limits money spent of redevelopment
-Climate may affect crops as limited rainfall = limited water supply which means that crop yields may decrease
Outline the economic factors that have caused uneven development (2)
-Many LICs are trapped in primary product dependency and rely for a large % of their income on a single primary product
-Processing of raw materials takes place in HICs so LIC/NEEs are unable to add value to their products
What are the schemes implemented to solve the north-south divide
-Transport including HS2 and train electrification
-LEP and how it provided many job opportunities
-Local enterprise partnerships providing 6000 job opportunities and supporting 13,000 businesses
-Liverpool 2 a new port to double the port’s capacity which will create thousands of jobs in the north west, boost the regional economy with direct and indirect jobs and thus support business in an area that has experienced severe job losses.
What is organic farming?
Growing food without the use of chemicals and fertilisers
Explain why there is a growing demand in the UK for food from LICs (3)
-Rising demand for fresh/seasonal produce all year round
-Like strawberries from Mexico
-As people’s incomes have increased there have been a greater demand for exotic fruit and vegtables
What is meant by famine?
A widespread shortage of food
