Geography exam Review Unit 4 Flashcards
Memorize (33 cards)
What is Population Density?
Number of people who live in a certain area per square kilometre
What are Population Pyramids?
Series of horizontal bar graphs that show comparison of population by age and sex cohorts
What is a Dependency Load?
Groups of people that rely on others for support (Children/ Elderly)
What is population?
Number of people living in a certain space
What is Migration?
The movement of people from one place to another
What is an Immigrant?
People leaving their home country to get INTO another country
What is an Emigrant?
People moving OUT of a place to another (Usually from their home to other areas)
What are Push Factors?
Reasons people leave a place (War/Crime/etc..)
What are Pull Factors?
Reasons why people go to a place (Jobs/economy/education/etc..)
Types of Population Pyramids:
Rapidly expanding graph
Expanding Graph
Stable Graph
Contracting Graph
Explain Rapidly Expanding Graphs:
Rapid population rate, Many children, Less elderly, High death rate, Short life expectancy
Explain Expanding Graphs:
High birth rate, Declining death rate, Slightly longer life expectancy
Explain Stable Graphs:
Lower death rate, Declining birth rate, More people living to older age
Explain Contracting Graphs
Low birth & death rate, High dependency rate, Long life expectancy, “Greying population”
What is the Baby Boomer Generation?
A generation with very high birth rates, men returning from war and good economy.
Born between 1946-1964
List and explain the levels of dependency:
Youth dependency
population under 15 years old
Elderly Dependency
population over 65 years old
Economic Dependency
Working age population supporting dependents
List 5 types of land uses:
Transportation
Residential
Commercial
Industrial
Open Space and Recreational
Describe Transportation (Land uses)
Transportation systems include Vehicles, Travel paths and Terminal Facilities
Ineffective transportation can mess with peoples schedules and efficiency
Describe Residential (Land uses)
Focuses on density of housing units
High residential density- large accumulation of people living in an area
Medium residential density- medium accumulation of people living in an area
Low residential density- smaller accumulation of people living in an area
Describe Commercial (Land uses)
This includes buildings along roads, malls, offices, that buy and sell a large range of goods and services
Lower- Order Goods and Services- Goods and services that are purchased frequently (usually inexpensive)
Higher- Order Goods and Services- Goods and services that are not needed frequently (expensive)
Describe Industrial (Land uses)
Relates to manufacturing but now contains distribution factors for products imported from other countries
Describe Open Space and Recreational (Land uses)
Open space includes parkland, golf courses and vacant land
How can we build better communities? List the 5 features:
Walkability
Connectivity
Mixed-use development
Green Spaces
Affordability
Explain Walkability (5 features)
ease of walking in the community
