Geography - Paper 1 (Natural Hazards, Living World and Physical Landscapes in UK) Flashcards
(15 cards)
Conservative plate boundary.
Two tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally.
Destructive plate boundary.
Two tectonic plates move towards each other.
Constructive plate boundary.
Two tectonic plates move away from each other.
How are volcanoes formed at destructive plate boundaries?
Oceanic plate subducts and melts in the mantle, creating magma which rises up to the surface, forming a volcano.
How are volcanoes formed at constructive plate boundaries?
Plates move away from each other and magma rises to fill the gap created which forms a volcano.
Why do areas close to the equator usually have high rainfall?
Air rises rapidly along the equator, which then cools and condenses which leads to heavy showers and frequent thunderstorms.
Give one natural cause of changes in global temperatures.
Volcanic activity.
State two economic impacts of climate change.
Less tourism as flooding and lack of snow on ski resortsvis more common.
What is the role of producers in an ecosystem?
Organisms that produce their own food.
What is the difference between a food web and a food chain?
A food web has a number of connected food chains whereas a food chain is one straight chain.
Why are different biomes found in different parts of the world?
Different types of soil, distance from the sea and temperature.
Compare two features of constructive and destructive waves.
Constructive - Strong swash, weak backwash and helps to build up the beach
Destructive - Strong backwash, weak swash and removes material from the beach.
What is abrasion?
What is attrition?
