Geography; Tectonics Homework 18.11.24 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Continental Crust
the part of the earth’s crust (outer layer) that makes up the continents (land)
Tectonic plates
huge segments of the earth’s crust
Plate boundaries
where two tectonic plates meet
Constructive plate boundary
when two plates are moving apart from each other
Destructive plate boundary
when an oceanic plate meets and continental plate the oceanic plate is subducted under the continental plate (oceanic plate is more dense)
Conservative plate boundary
when two plates move past each other
Collision plate boundary
when two continental plates collide
Seismic waves
sudden movement of the earth’s crust, fast waves of energy
Deep focus earthquakes
occur only at destructive boundaries 70-700 km under the Earth’s surface
Shallow focus earthquakes
occur at conservative boundaries and in the upper part of destructive and collision boundaries, they start within 70 km of Earth’s surface.
