Bus: Means of public transport on city streets.

Cars and Trucks description:
Around 1980 cars were the most widely used means of transportation.
- Trucks which were also very common around 1980, had replaced trains for transporting merchandise.
- Trucks were much more practical for carrying goods over short distances, especially for carrying goods.
Buses and the Metro
- Around 1980, buses had replaced streetcars as the main means of transportation.
- In the city of Quebec, buses had replaced streetcars in 1948. In Montreal, streetcars remained in use until 1959 even through a bus service was set up in 1919.
- 1966: the metro public transportation system opened in Montreal. It was able to carry hundreds.
Airplanes
- Around 1980, airplanes were an essential means of transportation for long-distance travel.
- Used for carrying both passengers and merchandise.
- 1940: first commercial airplane.
- In the beginning, airplanes could only carry 20 passengers.
What is an environmental problem related to the increased number of vehicles on the province’s roads?

- We can reduce air pollution by reducing the number of cars on the roads by taking public transport, like a bus or the metro.
What is a lock?
A lock is like a staircase, allowing boats to pass from one water level to another.
What is a canal?
A canal is an artificial waterway, dug by humans, to allow ships to travel farther inland.
What is the St. Lawrence Seaway?
The St. Lawrence Seaway is a system of locks and canals that encourages international trade.
- Ships on the seaway carried mostly raw materials, such as grain and mining products.
- Industries in remote regions sent their raw materials to the St. Lawrence Seaway by train or truck.
- Goal: makes it possible for a large ship to reach the Great Lakes by gong around natural obstacles, such as rapids.
The difference between a highway and a road:
A highway is wide.
- People can travel faster on a highway.

1959: The first highway in the province, the Autoroute des Laurentides (Highway 15) was opened to traffic.
Quebec Highways in the southern part of the province:
There are more highways in the southern part of the province because most of the population lives there and that is where there is the most traffic.
