Q

What is secretory diarrhoea?

A

When chloride ions are secreted into the gut lumen by CFTR pumps, and water follows down the oncotic gradient.

Q

What is hyper motility diarrhoea?

A

Bowel transit time is increased, resulting in decresaed endothelial contact and decreased absorption

Q

What is osmotic diarrhoea?

A

When the solutes in the lumen ARE NOT BROKEN DOWN so act as an osmotic driver, bringing water into the lumen instead of out of it. Different to secretory diarrhoea.

Q

What’s the difference between osmotic and secretory diarrhoea?

A

Osmotic: undirected solutes create an oncotic gradient, bringing water into the lumen.

Secretory: chloride is moved into the lumen through CFTR transporters, and this makes water also enter the lumen.
