Giacalone and Rosenfeld Flashcards
4.5 Key Study (11 cards)
1
Q
Context of G&R
A
- cost of sabotage rising, very little research done
- classified sabotage into different methods with different reasons
2
Q
Aim of G&R
A
- to investigate whether people who accept more reasons for sabotage
- will justify sabotage more than those who don’t
3
Q
Research method of G&R
A
survey
4
Q
Sample of G&R
A
- volunteer sample of 38 labourers (union members)
- at an electrical factory in northeast USA
5
Q
Procedure of G&R
A
- designed a sabotage METHODS questionnaire & sabotage REASONS questionnaire, given by non-supervisory colleagues (reduce chances of lying)
- four types of sabotage were asked about: Wat Da Cuck Dude
* work slowdowns
* destruction of machinery, premises or products
* causing chaos
* dishonesty - Answers were collated and grouped into ‘low reason’ (below median) and ‘high reason’ (above median) acceptors
6
Q
Ethics of G&R
A
- consent was obtained, but participants not told the true reason for the research (deception)
- Answers were anonymous and kept confidential - could be problematic, as some actions were criminal
7
Q
Mean scores G&R, for high reason acceptors
A
Work slowdown: 25
Destruction: 19.8
Causing chaos: 13.5
Dishonesty: 15.5
- High reason acceptors saw all four forms of sabotage as being more justified than low reason acceptors
- difference for dishonesty not significant
8
Q
Mean scores G&R, for low reason acceptors
A
Work slowdown: 18.9
Destruction: 13
Causing chaos: 8.8
Dishonesty: 12.4
9
Q
Conclusion of G&R
A
- Those who accept more reasons for sabotage are significantly more likely to justify all types of sabotage, except dishonesty
10
Q
Application to everyday life (G&R)
A
- researchers considered more studies were needed to determine rs between perceived justifiability + performing act of sabotage
- development of this could encourage reporting sabotage or identifying employees at risk of performing sabotage
11
Q
Idiographic vs nomothetic (G&R)
A
- Nomo: looks for general laws & trends
- used structured questionnaires
- Idio can be used (unstrucutred interviews & focus grps) to provide more insight
