Q

Carbohydrate absorption details:

1.) is it adequate in newborn?

2.) what transporters used for glucose, galactose, fructose?

3.) which one(s) of those are active? Which facilitated?

A

1.) carb abs is adequate bc of adequate digestion and bc of the colonic salvage pathway

2.) glucose and galactose use glut 1 on apical surface. Fructose uses glut 5 on apical surface. All use glut 2 on basal surface.

3.) gal and glucose are ACTIVE (require Na). Fructose is facilitated/passive. THINK: Fructose Facilitated by glut Five

don’t let this confuse you bc glucose transport in the placenta is FACILITATED
