glacial processes Flashcards
types of erosion
abrasion and plucking
abrasion
ice includes angular forst shottered material which scours the landscape - large rocks carried below the ice often scratch the bedrock to form striations
plucking/quarrying
meltwater freezes part of the underlying bedrock at base of glacier and any loosened rock fragments are pulcked wawy as the glacier slips forward
3 types of glacial transportation
supraglacial = mianly weathered material carried on top of the ice
englacial = formally supraglacial material is now buried by fresh snowfall and carried within ice
subglacial = material carried below ice, which is dragged and pulversied by overlying glacier
depostion where it happens
depostion of sediment is transported by ice, ouccring when it melts mianly in the ablation zone away from the ice
