periglacial canada landscapes Flashcards
(5 cards)
pingos
-largest and oldest pingos in world = MacKenzie Delta - over 50m high and 300m wide
-this delta has highest conc of pingos on earth (around 1350
-Ibyuk pingo, second largest pingo on earth (15 story building, 1000m wide, 1300 years old, estimated rising 2cm a year)
-made by groundwater getting trapped on side of small lakes by freezing from above and continous permafrost below as it moves inwards. freezing and expansion of the trapped water, pushed overlying sediment upwards into pingo form (closed)
nivation hollows
knob lake,in highlands of Labrador lake
blockfield
-Manitoba, canada, developed on granite bedrock
- Created by the process of freeze thaw/frost shattering, as large chunks of rock are broken off and pile up as scree
how processes create distinctive landscape
periglacial processes alter and shape the land in many ways, and often support hardy vegetation and wildlife adapted to extreme temperatures
basic canada periglacial facts
about 50% canada covered in permafrost (Yukon, nunavut, Arctic Archipelago)
-largest island in arctic archipelago is Baffin Bay
-Baffin bay has several ice caps (Largest is Penny and Barnes ice caps)
- Baffin island has a tundra ecosystem - winters long and cold but during short summers, snow and soil layers above permafrost melt, feeding lakes and streams
