glacial landforms Flashcards

(5 cards)

1
Q

subglacial

A

below glacier/ice sheet
- erosion is active here, forming striations and roche moutonee. neltwater below the ice can create eskers as a results of subglacial depostion
-Features occur at micro scales or meso scales

Q

marginal

A

at sides or end of glacier/ice sheet
-weathering and depostion operate here to create landforms like moraines

Q

pro glacial

A

in front of, at, or beyong the margin of glacier/ice sheet
-fluvioglacial processes operate here with metlwater eroding, transporting, and depositing sediment to create outwash plains, meltwater channels, and proglacial lakes

Q

periglacial

A

edges of ice sheets/glaciers and can be extensive
-processes operating here are mostly associated with frost, ice. snow, and meltwater
-create range of landforms e.g. blockfields, ice wedges, pingos
-landforms are extensive so occur at macroscale

Q

scale of glacial landforms

A

macro = around 1km or greater in size and form major elements in glaciated highland landscape
meso = found within macro features - intermediate scale ladnforms around 10km-1km in length
micro ? few metres in size or less e.g striations
