Who is the composer?
Erik Satie, who can be described as an eccentric French composer. His most famous pieces are the Gymnopédies, or his five ballets.
Where did the title come from?
They believe it’s from the Greek word “gnosis”, meaning mystical knowledge, or the dance music of Knossos in Crete.
His Trois Gnossienes were his first works that included the absense of bar lines and eccentric annotations. This is the first of them, and was composed in 1880 to have a timeless quality.
What is the key?
F minor.
Style?
Described as a Post-Romantic style, so not overly emotional. Characterized by:
- timeless, mystical, emotionally-aloof quality, with an unchanging accompaniment rhythm
- irregular phrase lengths
- repetition of melodies without any thematic development
