Who is the composer?
Justin Levitt, who is an American pianist and self-taught composer. His music blends popular and classical components.
About the title/piece.
This piece is from the album “By my side”, and is a mourning song of farewell, but also the hope of meeting again.
What key is the piece in?
F♯ Major. There is no modulation which can be seen because there are no accidentals.
What is the time signature?
6/4, or compound duple time. Six crotchet beats er bar, but are sometimes grouped into two dotted minims.
What is the form of the song?
It has two sections and a coda. The two first sections act like verses in a song and are very similar in pattern with some melodic or rhythmic variations. The second is in a higher pitch register and the coda is also very similar to Section 1.
What is the style of the piece?
A mix of classical and popular elements, characterized by:
- lyrical melodies
- regular 4-bar structue
- diatonic harmonies (no accidentals)
- lilting rhythms with an easy flow
- simple chordal accompaniments, spanning a wide pitch range

Resembles a ‘modified strophic’ song. The two verses are very similar, and end on the dominant chord. The piece avoids using the tonic chord until the final bar.
