Chemical disbudding
-clip hair tufts away where horns appear to erupt -apply chemical dehorning (paste, liquid, or stick) directly to the horn bud area
37
Disbudding iron
-hot iron is pressed firmly against the head -the heat sears the hair and skin and destroys the epidermis of the horn bud
38
Deoderizing
-optional -removing the musk or scent glands on bucks -glands are located behind and along the inside edge of each horn base -done when disbudding -hot iron is reapplied 1/2 in. behind and towards the center from the disbudded horn buds
39
Caseous Lymphadenitis (CL)
-contagious bacterial infection of the lymph nodes -able to survive in the soil for years -two forms: external and internal
40
How is caseous lymphadentitis spread?
spread through contact with pus containing organisms, contaminated soil, bedding, feed, equipment, or flies
41
External CL
-external abscesses grow to several inches -with time the skin thins and weakens allowing the lymph node to rupture (greenish-white pus) -gets them on their jaws, shoulder, lower flank, and udder
42
Internal CL
-abscesses develop on lymph nodes deep within goat's body -lymph nodes enlarge causing weight loss and reduced weight gain -common cause of carcass condemnation at slaughter -mainly in chest cavity -difficult to detect
43
Treatment of internal CL
-difficult to detect and treat -long-term antibiotic treatment
44
Treatment of external CL
-isolating infected animals -lancing abscesses
45
Prevention of CL
-newly purchased goats should be isolated and screened -vaccinate against CL -fly control
46
Barber pole worm
-most economically important parasite in goat production -worm causes anemia during grazing season -tooth lacerates the abomasum wall
47
What is used to identify which goats to deworm for barber pole worm?
