God in Christianity Flashcards
(19 cards)
What does Genesis one tell Christians about creation?
Happened in six days and God rested on the seventh
God approved of his creation
God is omnipotent -instantaneous creation
Humans are the pinnacle of creation
What does genesis two tell Christine about creation?
Potential contradiction to Genesis one
Adam formed from dust and Eve made from Adam’s rib as his helper
What problems are raised by Genesis accounts of creation?
God is omnipotent, but he rested on the seventh day
Problems of gender equality : women made out of atom rib , Omni benevolent God would create humans equally
Incompatible with evolutionary theory human developing over a long time
Fundamentalist view
The Bible is a word of God
God created the world as specified in Genesis
God is omnipotent and doesn’t need to obey scientific laws
Some believe in Apparent age
Apparent age
The world is a maximum10,000 years old
God created everything to appear old
Problems with fundamental views
Epistemic distance-there is a gap in knowledge between what God wants us to do and what we think he wants us to do
Translations of the Bible changes meaning and so may change how one takes the law
Eg.Women shouldn’t speak in church (speak in Greek could also be gossip/chatter). Changing how you take it literally
Conservative Christian view
Bible written by humans inspired by God
Follow its teachings but don’t necessarily take every word as being voice of God
Eg. One of God’s days may not necessarily be the same length of one of our(Hebrew word ‘Yom’ Could also be translated as ‘Period of time’
Genesis is just a poetic list and not necessarily in order
Pros of the conservative interpretation
Avoids incompatibility with scientific theories
Problems with conservative interpretation
Why need the Bible if they’re choosing what to believe
Different interpretations could cause conflict or inconsistency
Liberal Christian view
Bible was written about God
When reading creation story they might believe that it is simply a story to help Christians understand that God is the creator of the world
The Big Bang Theory and religious views of creation
Challenges fundamentalists as World was created over billions of years not days
Compatible with liberal and conservative - God initiates the Big Bang process

What qualities should a good father have?
Positive- supportive, knowledgeable
Did Jesus’ teaching of God as the father differ from his contemporaries
Yes
Romans- their gods were vengeful and distant, they’d be punished if they don’t worship the gods
Jews- Yahweh perceived as the father but he was disciplinarian
