Goodbyes & See You Later Flashcards
(5 cards)
さようなら
(Sayounara) – Goodbye (formal, rarely used in daily life):
This is the classic “goodbye” you often see in textbooks, but it’s actually quite formal and used less frequently in everyday conversation. It implies a longer or even permanent separation.
“Sayounara” is much more formal than most people realize.
じゃあね
(Jaa ne) – See you (casual):
This is a very common, casual way to say “see you.” It’s used among friends and people who are close.
またね
(Mata ne) – See you later:
This is another casual phrase, meaning “see you later” or “see you again.” It indicates that you expect to meet again.
Casual phrases like “jaa ne” and “mata ne” are far more common in daily Japanese conversation.
また明日
(Mata ashita) – See you tomorrow:
This literally translates to “see you tomorrow.” It’s used when you know you’ll be seeing someone again the next day.
また会いましょう
(Mata aimashou) – Let’s meet again:
This phrase is a little more formal than “mata ne” and it means “let’s meet again”. It is used when you would like to arrange to see the person again at a later time.
“Mata aimashou” is useful when you want to make plans to see someone in the future.
