Model of Democracy and Capitalism
Democracy- equal rights on deciding how country is run
Capitalism- industry owned by private businesses (run to make profit)
Great inequality in wealth- tend to be most wealthiest (UK,USA,Germany) NHS in UK vs private USA
Why do some governments not adopt Western values? (2)
-unsustainable lifestyles- energy and water intensive, greenhouse gas emissions
-atheists/relaxed religious views eg pro-abortion, divorce
Sharia Law- opposes Westernisation (4)
Model of Non-Secular Governance (law and religion intertwined)
Differing attitudes towards marriage, women’s roles in society
Severity of interpretations eg Qatar- alcohol prohibited- imprisonment, rape= castration
Saudi Arabia- one of stricter, death penalty and women’s rights limited but oil wealth keeps influence
Bolivia- opposes Sharia Law and Westernisation (5)
Model of Sustainability
President is leader of party- “Movement towards Socialism”
2009 Constitution- Law of Mother Earth
Government has duty to protect Mother Nature- reducing resource consumption and removing weapons of mass destruction
Damage= restore Mother Nature to equilibrium
Communism- opposes to capitalism
Model to reduce wealth inequality
state-owned industries= competition reduced and not for profit
Not been most successful- little economic growth (no FDI)
Gov restricts freedom of speech and human rights to maintain one-party control
HOWEVER- China, fastest growing and relaxed one-child policy, not limiting economic growth
Authoritarian- Opposing to democracy (3)
also known as Totalitarian- decisions made my government or individual alone
North Korea- persecution for whoever questions government, execution and torture, dictatorship
Myanmar- persecution of Rohingya Muslims- migrate and flee to avoid torture/murder, limited freedom of speech (journalists imprisoned if portray gov -vely)
