GPS Flashcards
(16 cards)
What does GPS mean?
GPS stands for Global Positioning system
What is a GPS system?
A worldwide navigation system that uses radio transmitters and signals to plot locations
What is the key thing a GPS lets you do?
It enables people to identify exact locations of anything on the earth at any time and in any weather
What are the three parts to a GPS triangle?
Control segment (ground) –> Space segment (satellites) –> User segment (receivers)
How high above the earth are the GPS satellites
20,200km above the earth
How many ground stations are there?
There are 5 ground stations
Where are the 5 ground stations located?
Colorado Springs Hawaii Ascension Island Diego Garcia Kwajalein
What do ground stations do?
Track and monitor satellites
What does a GPS receiver do?
Allows you to determine a location with great precision
What limits their use?
Forested areas and being near tall buildings
How does a GPS receiver work?
A GPS receiver detects signals transmitted by satellites and uses them to calculate precise locations
What is triangulation?
The use of three or more satellites, which allows the GPS receiver to triangulate it’s position relative to the satellites
How do geographers use GPS?
They use it to identify the location of features on maps, and provide co-ordination points that can plot a series of map layers in GIS
How does the government use GPS?
They use it to determine the location of emergency vehicles and locate important elements of urban infrastructure
How does the general public use GPS?
They use it navigate their personal vehicles and fix a boat’s position
How do scientists use GPS?
They use it to track animals in the wild and measure the growth of Mt Everest
