Where did he live?

A

Pytheas comes from Marseille, more popularly known by the ancient Greeks and Romans as Massalia. Marseille, today, is a city in France. It is located toward the south, along the water line.

What did he do?

A
  • He sailed out of the Bay of Biscay and didn’t stop until he’d rounded the coast of Brittany and crossed the English Channel as well as fully circumnavigating the British Isles.
  • He was the first person to associate the ocean tides with the moon.
  • He was an independent adventurer and scientific traveller.
  • He somehow knew of the midnight sun

Due to his knowledge of the midnight sun he came across the Arctic Circle. He has been recognised for travelling approximately 7,500 miles of the ocean.
