What does E.Coli stand for ?
Escherichia Coli
Where is e.coli found?
In faeses and found in the gut of humans,cattle,pigs and fish
How is e.coli transmitted ?
By contaminated meat, unpasteurised dairy, contaminated fruit and veg and environmental (surface run off)
What are some predisposing factors of E.coli UTI’s?
Women, pregnancy, sexual, catheterisation.
What do you need to see to test positive for a UTI’s?
Symptoms, with high WBC and high bacteria cells.
Name 3 types of UTI’s
Urethritis, cystitis and pyelonephritis
Which organ does cysists effect?
Bladder
Who is likely to get cysists and what are the symptoms?
Young females,Recently sexually active 50% report 1+ cases, burning sensation when peeing
Pyelonephritis is an infection of which organ?
Kidney
What are the symptoms of pyelonephritis?
Lower back pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, bacteraemia( bacteria in blood), high RBC +WBC count in urine.
In diarrhoeagenic E.coli are antibiotics given or not ?
No! Would only reduce symptoms by a day and normally left to cure by itself.
Enterohaemorrhagic EHEC- strain 0157 was the most important, how is this transmitted?
Through fases to oral transmission, may be contaminated food gets into your intestines
What can EHEC- strain 0157 cause ?
Mild gastroenteritis to severe bloody diarrhoea, extreme Haemolytic uraemia syndrome- produces toxin that edeects kidney function.
Salmonella is not commensal, what does this mean ?
It does not make up the normal flora.
Do all strains of salmonella causes diseases?
Yes !
Source of salmonella ?
Found in GI tracts of animal, poultry, cattle, reptiles
What 2 things can happen after the ingestion of salmonella
Can have non-typhoidal or typhoidal salmonella
Explain what happens if you end up with non-typhoidal salmonella?
Get gastroenteritis, localised to GI tract (10 days) causes diarrhoea
Explain what happens if you end up with typhoidal salmonella?
Leads to enteric fever- diarrhoea or constipation (around 3 weeks) can be acute or chronic carriers (only 5%)
What does bacteraemia mean ?
Bugs and blood and can lead to sepsis
What are the symptoms of sepsis?
fever, raised heart rate, fast breathing, nausea, confusion and evidence of infection.
What does Proteus Mirabilis causes ?
Uti, bacteraemia, pneumonia and encrustation of catheters
