Group 2 Flashcards
What are the properties of Group 2 elements ?
- reactive metals
- strong reducing agents
Why are Group 2 elements reducing agents ?
they reduce other species and themselves get oxidised
State and explain the trend in reactivity down the group.
- atomic radius increases as shielding increases
- so nuclear attraction decreases
- therefore less energy is required to lose electrons
- so reactivity increases
What is produced when a metal reacts with oxygen ?
a metal oxide
What would you observe during a reaction of a Group 2 metal and water ?
- bubbles produced
- metal dissolves
What would you observe during a reaction of a Group 2 metal and water in the presence of universal indicator ?
it would turn blue/purple
What happens to the pH of the reaction of Group 2 metal with water as you go down Group 2, and why ?
- pH increases
- solubility increases going down the group, so OH- concentration increases
What would you observe when a metal oxide reacts with hydrochloric acid ?
a precipitate forms
What are the uses of calcium hydroxide ?
- to neutralise soils in agriculture
- to relieve indigestion
What can magnesium hydroxide be used for ?
to relieve indigestion
