- Socially: the need to belong, form relations with people who resemble us
Group cohesiveness
Qualities of a group that bind members together and promote liking between members. Members more likely to stay, partake, recruit
Social facilitation
Presence of others increases physiological arousal. Helpful in doing simple tasks, not when doing complex ones.
Social loafing experiment rope
36 participants. One participant against 1, 2, or 3 people. The amount of pull given went down with each member
Social facilitation vs social loafing
Social facilitation helps with simple tasks, impairs on harder tasks, social loafing impairs on simpler tasks, helps on harder tasks
Deindividuation
Loss of self-awareness and evaluation apprehension. In groups fostering anonymity. Masked people = more impulsive destructive behavior
