Guidance and Feedback - paper 1 Flashcards
SKILL ACQUISITION (29 cards)
what are the 4 types of guidance?
- verbal
- visual
- manual
- mechanical
advantages of verbal guidance
- can be used at all stages of learning
- can be used alongside other methods
- can be delivered to multiple people at a time
disadvantages of verbal guidance
- coach must have required skill to be taught correctly
- difficult for difficult skills
- learners can become bored
advantages of visual guidance
- can be used at all stages of learning
- mental image can be formed
- can be used alongside other methods
- can be delivered to multiple people at a time
disadvantages of visual guidance
- coach must have required skill to be taught correctly
- difficult for difficult skills
- learners can become bored
advantages of manual guidance
- can be used alongside other methods
- useful for beginners
- provides kinaesthetic understanding
- reduce risk of injury to novices
disadvantages of manual guidance
- difficult to deliver to multiple learners
advantages of mechanical guidance
- useful for beginners that require physical assistance
- provides kinaesthetic understanding
- reduce risk of injury to novices
disadvantages of mechanical guidance
- specialised equipment required
- can be expensive
what sources can an individual gain feedback from?
- positive feedback
- negative feedback
- intrinsic feedback
- extrinsic feedback
- knowledge of performance
- knowledge of results
what is intrinsic feedback?
received within the athlete based on kinaesthetic (ie how the movement feels)
advantages of intrinsic feedback
- improves feel of movement
- elite athletes can use without guidance from coach or external feedback
disadvantages of intrinsic feedback
- inexperienced athletes won’t know the correct feel for the movement
- performers may not know if they performed movement correctly
what is extrinsic feedback
feedback received from external factors
advantages of extrinsic feedback
- can be used during early stages of learning
- positive extrinsic feedback can improve motivation and focus
disadvantages of extrinsic feedback
- doesn’t help develop kinesthetics awareness of movement
- performer can become reliant
- negative extrinsic feedback can cause a loss of confidence
what is positive feedback?
letting the athlete know they performed well
advantages of positive feedback
- increases motivation @cognitive stage of learning
- increases confidence @cognitive stage of learning
- increases reinforcement in successful behaviour
disadvantages of positive feedback
- if used excessively performers may become over confident
what is negative feedback?
letting the athlete know they aren’t performing well
advantages of negative feedback?
- improve focus and motivation to complete athletes goals
- reinforce correct skill execution
disadvantages of negative feedback
- negative impact on motivation and confidence in early stages of learning
what is knowledge of performance feedback?
provides knowledge on how well a skill is being performed compared to optimal performance
advantages of knowledge of performance feedback
- provides additional insight to refine skills
- explains why performance is successful (useful for cognitive stage of learning)
