Why were pretenders still a threat despite Henry’s early actions?
Weak royal claim, gained throne through battle, not blood, Yorkist support remained strong, disappearance of the ‘Princes in the Tower’, some sought power for themselves.
Who were the main pretenders to Henry VII’s throne?
Lovell & the Staffords, Lambert Simnel (backed by Lincoln), Perkin Warbeck, Earl of Warwick, Edmund & Richard de la Pole.
Who were Lovell and the Staffords?
Supporters of Richard III, tried uprising in Yorkshire & Midlands, Lovell escaped, Stafford execute, little support — even in Yorkist areas.
Who was Lambert Simnel, and what did he claim?
A boy trained to impersonate the Earl of Warwick (Edward IV’s nephew), crowned in Ireland (1487) as “King Edward VI”.
Who supported Simnel, and how did Henry respond?
Backed by Earl of Lincoln, Lovell, and Margaret of Burgundy, Henry showed real Warwick in London, Simnel invaded England with mercenaries.
What happened at the Battle of Stoke Field (1487)?
Simnel’s forces defeated, Lincoln killed, Henry showed leniency, gained Yorkist support.
Who was Perkin Warbeck and what did he claim?
Pretended to be Richard, Duke of York (prince in the tower), claimed Yorkist royal blood.
Why was Warbeck a serious threat?
Supported by Ireland, France, Burgundy, Scotland, gained foreign aid for 8 years (though he didn’t do anything with it).
What happened during Warbeck’s invasions?
Failed landing (1495), fled to Scotland. 1496: Small invasion over border, failed. 1497: Tried to join Cornish Rebellion, failed, captured and executed in 1499.
Who was the real Earl of Warwick?
Nephew of Richard III, age 10 when imprisoned, innocent, but used in multiple plots, executed with Warbeck in 1499.
Who were Edmund and Richard de la Pole?
Brothers of Lincoln, Yorkist claimants, Edmund (Earl of Suffolk) fled to Burgundy, captured (1506), executed 1513, Richard (‘White Rose’) exiled, died 1525 at Battle of Pavia.
