Halide Ions Flashcards
(6 cards)
How do you test for chloride, bromide, and iodide ions in solution?
Add silver nitrate solution. Chloride forms a white precipitate (AgCl), bromide a cream precipitate (AgBr), and iodide a yellow precipitate (AgI).
Why is nitric acid added before testing for halide ions with silver nitrate?
To prevent interference from carbonate ions.
What color is the precipitate when silver nitrate is added to a solution containing chloride ions?
White (AgCl).
What color is the precipitate when silver nitrate is added to a solution containing bromide ions?
Cream (AgBr).
What color is the precipitate when silver nitrate is added to a solution containing iodide ions?
Yellow (AgI).
What is the reaction that occurs when a halide ion (X-) reacts with silver ions (Ag+)?
Ag+ (aq) + X- (aq) → AgX (s)
