Tests Tube Reactions Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a common method used to identify a carbonate ion?
Adding dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) and observing the production of carbon dioxide gas (bubbles).
How would you identify a chloride ion in a solution?
Add a few drops of silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution, which will produce a white precipitate (AgCl).
How do you test for ammonia gas?
Use damp red litmus paper. It turns blue in the presence of ammonia.
How do you test for sulfate ions?
Add dilute hydrochloric acid, then add barium chloride solution. A white precipitate of barium sulfate (BaSO4) forms.
Why is barium chloride solution used in the sulfate test?
Barium ions form a white insoluble precipitate with sulfate ions.
How do you test for carbonate ions?
Add dilute hydrochloric acid to a solution containing carbonate ions. The gas produced turns limewater (calcium hydroxide solution) milky.
What gas is produced when hydrochloric acid reacts with carbonate ions?
Carbon dioxide gas (CO2).
