Flashcards in Hate+Conflict In Romeo And Juliet Deck (13)
A silly quarrel started a huge feud
"Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word,
By three, old Capulet, and Montague,"
Even the servants, who are unrelated to the family, hate the Capulets
"The quarrel is between our masters and us their men,"
Hate/ Conflict immediately introduces in first few lines
"Two households, both alike in dignity,
From ancient grudge break new mutiny,"
A big street-fight was cause over a silly gesture
"I do not bite my thumb at you sir, but I bite my thumb,"
Male bravado, Tybalt won't leave Romeo alone
"It fits, when such a villain is a guest:
I'll not endure him,"
Tybalt threatens to kill Romeo for such a silly reason at a party
"But this intrusion shall,
Now seeming sweet, convert to bitter gall,"
Fight can be started for no reason, at any time
"The day is hot, the Capulets a roads
And, if we meet, we shall not 'scape a brawl,"
Tybalt will not stand for peace
"Boy; this shall not excuse the injuries
That thou hast done me; therefore turn and draw,"
Romeo tries to overcome family hate
"I do protest, I never injur'd thee,
But love thee better than thou canst devise,"
Mercutio's male bravado
"O calm, dishonourable, vile submission!
Tybalt you rat-catcher, will you walk?"
Mercutio curse the feud
"I am hurt,
A plague o' both your houses! I am sped,"
Family conflict tears Romeo and Juliet
"And for that offence,
Immediately do we exhale him hence,"
