Frontalis
A thin, sheet-like muscle located on the forehead whose primary function is to raise the eyebrows. This muscle is essential for facial expressions, such as surprise, concern, and curiosity.
Orbicularis oris (Kissing muscle)
A circular muscle located around the mouth whose function is to close the lips, protrude the lips, wrinkle the nose, whistle, speech articulation, and kissing.
Orbicularis oculi
A thin, circular muscle located around the eyes whose function is to close the eyelids, protect the eyes from irritants and injury, help pump tears into the lacrimal duct, and contribute to facial expressions such as: blinking, squinting, and frowning.
Occipitofrontalis
A large, superficial muscle that covers the scalp and extends from the occipital bone at the back of the head to the frontal bone at the forehead.
Zygomaticus major
A thin, superficial muscle located in the facial region that elevates and retracts the angle of the mouth, producing a smiling expression.
Masseter
Elevates the mandible (lower jaw), enabling chewing and biting.
Stemocleidomastoid
A large, paired muscle located in the anterior neck that plays a crucial role in head and neck movements.
Trapezius
Either of a pair of large triangular muscles extending over the back of the neck and shoulders and moving the head and shoulder blade.
Buccinator
A thin, flat muscle located in the cheeks that plays a role in facial expressions, mastication, articulation, suckling, holding food in the mouth, and air expulsion.
