Muscles of the Trunk Flashcards
(6 cards)
External intercostals
Muscles between the ribs, extending from the posterior aspect of the thorax to the anterior aspect that elevate and expand the rib cage, facilitating inhalation.
Internal intercostals
A group of eleven pairs of skeletal muscles located between the ribs whose function is to assist in respiration by pulling the ribs downward and inward. They also help to stabilize the rib cage and prevent it from bulging outward during inspiration.
Transverse abdominis
A deep abdominal muscle located beneath the internal oblique muscle. It plays a crucial role in supporting the core, maintaining abdominal pressure, and facilitating various movements.
Rectus abdominis
Muscles located on the front of the abdomen whose functions are trunk flexion, abdominal compression, pelvic stabilization, respiration, posture, and core strength.
Serratus anterior
Muscle located on the anterior surface of the chest, between the ribs and the shoulder blade. The serratus anterior muscle plays a crucial role in stabilizing and moving the shoulder blade.
Diaphragm
A dome-shaped muscle located below the lungs that plays a crucial role in respiration. Its primary function is to facilitate breathing by contraction and relaxation.
