Healing and repair CC Flashcards
What causes scurvy?
Vit C deficiency
Describe the mechanism that causes the problems related to scurvy
Inadequate Vit C dependent hydroxylation of procollagen alpha chains–>Less crosslinking so defective helix formation
How does scurvy present
Unable to heal wounds
Tooth loss
Old scars reopen
What is the underlying mechanism behind Ehlers-Dnalos Syndrome?
What is the presentation of this?
Defective conversion of procollagen to tropocollagen
Skin hyperextensible, thin, fragile
Prediposition to joint dslocation
Osteogenesis Imperfecta
What is it?
Clinical manifastations?
Too little T1 collagen–>Too little bone tissue
Severe deformation of long bones
Blue sclera
Dental abnormalities
Hearing impairment
ALport syndrome
What is it
Causes dysfunction of what? And how does it present?
T4 collagen abnormal
Dysfunction of Glomerular basement membrane, Cochlea of ear and lens of eye
Presents with haematuria
Eventually leads to renal failure
What is a keloid scar?
A overgrowth of scar tissue, beyond the borders of the original scar
How does a keloid scar differ to a hypertrophic scar
Hypertrophic scar characterised by raised fibrous lesions. Don’t expand beyond the boundaries of the original lesions
Keloid scar is an overgrowth of dense fibrous tissue beyond the borders of the original wound
Which group of people are particularly at risk of keloid scar formation
Afro Caribbean peoples
