Heart Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the function of the right ventricle?
Pumps blood to the lungs.
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Pumps blood to the body.
The left ventricle is thicker due to the amount of blood it has to pump compared to the right ventricle.
What does the right atrium do?
Receives blood from the body.
What does the left atrium do?
Receives blood from the lungs.
What is the function of the valves in the heart?
Allows blood to flow and stops backflow.
What is the role of the pulmonary artery?
Carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
What is the role of the vena cava?
Carries deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart.
What is the role of the pulmonary vein?
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
What is the semi-lunar valve’s function?
Prevents backflow of blood from the arteries into the ventricles.
What is the atrioventricular valve’s function?
Prevents backflow of blood from the ventricles into the atria.
What is coronary disease?
Coronary disease is when the heart’s blood supply is blocked by a build-up of fatty substances in the coronary arteries.
What is a stent?
A stent is a wire mesh placed inside a coronary artery to keep it open.
A balloon is inflated inside the mesh to expand it and flatten the fatty acids.
What are statins?
Statins are prescription medicines used to lower cholesterol.
They reduce the amount of cholesterol made in the liver and help remove cholesterol already in the blood.
What is a pacemaker?
A pacemaker is a device placed on the right side near the vena cava that initiates a new heartbeat (55 - 80 BPM).
It acts as a sinus node to regulate heartbeat.
What are the side effects of statins?
Statins can come with many side effects, including the risk of preventing heart attacks and strokes.
