What is the main function of the heart?
To pump blood around the body.
How many chambers are in the heart?
Four – two atria (upper) and two ventricles (lower).
What separates the left and right sides of the heart?
The septum.
Which side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs?
The right side.
Which side of the heart pumps blood to the rest of the body?
The left side.
What are the names of the main heart valves?
Tricuspid, bicuspid (mitral), pulmonary, and aortic valves.
Name the blood vessels entering and leaving the heart.
Vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, and aorta.
What is the function of the lungs?
Gas exchange – taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide.
Where does gas exchange take place?
In the alveoli.
How are alveoli adapted for gas exchange?
Large surface area, moist lining, thin walls, and rich blood supply.
What gas moves into the blood in the lungs?
Oxygen.
What gas moves out of the blood in the lungs?
Carbon dioxide.
What muscle helps control breathing?
The diaphragm.
