before you dissect you should
examine external features: identify coronary arteries
run water into the top of heart and see if you can see the valves in the aorta and pulmonary arteries close
squeeze the heart gently and these valves should open and water come out
what should you look for when cutting open the atriums and ventricles
look at the thinness of the atrio ventricular valves
examine the thickness of the walls of ventricles
packing away
remove all pins and discard labels
place pins and dissecting instruments in the beaker with disinfectant
place heart in disposal bag
health and safety
lab coats should be worn
gloves should be removed immediately and disposed of
ensure cuts to skin are covered with waterproof dressings and everyone washes hands after
dissecting instruments are sharp and should be handled with care at all times
all surfaces should be washed thoroughly with detergent solution
